THIS IS THE INFO SHEET THAT TOM USES FOR HIS CAR!
1988 PORSCHE CARRERA CLUB SPORT COUPE – #21 OF 22 IN U.S.
Background: There have been Club Sport 924, 968, 993 and 996 models, but mostly for the Rest of World (RoW) market. The 1987 to 1989 Club Sport (“CSâ€) is a reduced weight version of the standard Carrera (six cylinder, 3.2L, 214HP, five speed) that was purpose-built by Porsche for club racing. The weight reduction for these models (approx. 110 pounds) came through deletion of the air conditioner, rear seat, all power options, radio, sound insulation, undercoating, rear wiper, door pocket lids, passenger side sun visor, fog lamps, engine and luggage compartment lights, and lockable wheel nuts. Special logo Porsche sport seats (rare) and an aluminum spare wheel replaced the original stock seats and spare wheel. The CS is recognized by (i) the “CS Club Sport†decal logo on the left front fender and deletion of the Carrera logo on the rear deck lid in the U.S. and German versions, or (ii) the “Carrera CS†decal on the sides of those cars sold in Great Britain. The CS (ordered in U.S. as Option M637) was offered in RoW from 1987 to 1989 but only 1988 and 1989 in the U.S. A total of 340 cars were produced from August 1987 to September 1989 with only twenty-eight examples sold in U.S.; twenty-two in MY88 and six in MY89. Research indicates that my car is the only one in Northern California; with four in Southern California; three U.S. 1988’s and one Euro 1989. Additional research indicates the exterior colors shipped to the U.S. were GP White (13), Black (3), Dark Blue (3), Silver Metallic (2), Pacific Blue (1), Guards Red (1), Diamond Blue Metallic (1) and four unknown. The exterior/interior colors for a few cars were made to sample; a yellow one has been reported. Typical interiors were black, blue or burgundy cloth or black leatherette with black Porsche lettering cloth and the Fuchs alloy wheels were painted red, white or black.
Engine/Performance/Handling Differences: Performance and handling improvements were obtained by increasing the engine redline from 6520rpm to 6840rpm with a different DME control unit (modified tachometer redline is a tipoff), adding a shorter gear shift lever, hollow intake valves, Bilstein sport shocks, 6J&8Jx15 wheels f/r with Pirelli P6 tires sized 195/65VR15 and 215/60VR15. Additionally, unlike standard Carreras, the crankcase and cylinder heads are marked with “SPâ€. European CS's dynoed at between 240-245HP due to the fact that the engines were blueprinted and hand balanced by the motorsports “Werks†division; the U.S. CS's reportedly put out around 225-230HP for the same reason as well as having a higher rev limit due to the different factory chip as discussed above. A standard 88/89 Carrera could be modified similarly, but it would be next to impossible to duplicate the stock CS in every detail; i.e. the decal and the logo sport seats can no longer be ordered from Porsche. U.S. owners have raced their cars in PCA/POC events from Sebring to Infineon; winning many titles. Typical racing modifications include roll bars/cage, 7&8x16 wheels f/r, racing harnesses, modified exhausts, modified steering setup, lowered suspension with modified sway and torsion bars, modified brake pads/rotors, competition seats and steering wheel, etc.
My Club Sport: I am the second owner; the original owner was an avid PCA racer and Porsche salesman who reportedly sold more than half of the CS’s exported to the U.S. in 1988! Details on my car as follows:
• Completed in Stuttgart on July 4, 1988, next to last of the twenty-two cars produced for the U.S. market in MY88. Of interest, as a further indicator of their limited edition status, the last four numbers of the MY88 cars are sequentially numbered from S/N 5061 to S/N 5082; mine is S/N 5081, with approximately 28,000 miles on the odometer.
• Raced in various PCA time trial/club racing events at Summit Raceway and Charlotte Motor Speedway. Since my purchase the car has participated in PCA autocross and concours events.
• Ride height approximately 25â€/24†f/r; about one inch lower than the CS stock suspension setup.
• Options/handling upgrades include electric sunroof (only CS in the world with a sunroof), Silver Metallic exterior, limited slip differential, 7&8x16 Fuchs alloy wheels f/r, 205/55ZR16 and 225/50ZR16 Bridgestone S-03’s f/r, Turbo tie rods, Cambermeister adjustable front strut brace, 22mm sway bars f/r, billet pedals, K&N filter, Borla exhaust, 930S steering wheel, passenger seat-mount 2.5lb Halon fire extinguisher, passenger rear view mirror and visor. Euro factory trim items include H4 headlights, black headlight trim rings, amber turning/taillight lenses and reflectorized rear bumper inserts.

STEWART HOWE' S GERMAN SPEC CS now in hands of new owner :(
We can NOT track down the new owner, although he has been spotted in West LA. Stewart's car is NOT Gray market as he states below in an excerpt from Rennlist Discussion
The fact is that since the "Gray Market" era, the state of CA has left only two certified conversion centers which are allowed to perform such testing and certification, both of which are top notch. Perhaps more to the point, '89 ROW CS's already had door bars, glass, and clean enough running engines so that all that had to be changed involved the addition of a MPH speedo, Cat ( off right away ) bumper struts( invisible ), change to US lighting ( changed back to original ), addition of a center tail light ( big whoop ) and various little things like a gas cap with some nonsence written on it ( original red one back on the car ).The majority of the huge bill (,700), covers the cost of testing and certification. The engine had just had a fresh 35K mi ( KM equivilent ) service done by Roock Racing in Germany, and thats exactly how it was delivered to me after the certification process was done, aside from the quickly removed Cat. Hardly altered, far from "Molested". Not to mention that ROW cars have a significant enough performance advantage for both PCA and POC to run them up one class from thier US brothers.
The truth is, aside from the center brake light, bumper struts and speedo, THIS CLUB SPORT IS EXACTLY AS IT WAS WHEN IT LEFT THE FACTORY, AND THAT IS JUST HOW IT LOOKS AND DRIVES. The factory "RS" seats, factory "Cup" steering wheel and bolt in roll bar are all ( not by accident ) designed to be easily removed, allowing the return of the original items, rendering the car back to stock, original and excellent condition.
