911 Engine Mount Tuning
by Stef Scheepers
(This article is only applicable for 911s of pre 1990 C2/C4 vintage)

Engine mounts are one of those things that are fitted to a car and then forgotten. Usually there is no reason to think about them again, since they are fairly reliable and won't let your engine drop in the road. Engine mounts are made of rubber to dampen the engine/gearbox vibration. However, the rubber will age and eventually becomes tired, especially if you have a high-mileage car that has been driven hard. Why should I change them and what are the benefits?, you may ask.

How about increased chassis rigidity, increased throttle linkage feel and a more precise gearshift.

If you want to hot-rod a 911 for racing, then a set of solid engine mounts are just the thing for you. They are cheap and will last forever. The solid mounts will tie the engine solidly to the rear of the car, which makes a very dramatic improvement in chassis stiffness, which again improves the cars handling. The downside to solid mounts is that they transmit every vibration into the cars chassis and it will constantly sound as if everything in your engine/ gearbox is about to fail. For a dedicated race car the noise is not a problem, but for a car that serves a dual purpose as a street/track car, it might be too much.

On the other end of the scale is a set of stock engine mounts, but fortunately there is a compromise between the soft stock mounts and the completely rigid solid mounts. This mount is known as the Carrera Club Sport option M637. It was originally designed for the limited production 87-89 Club Sport, which is a lightweight 911 that was designed for club racing straight from the factory. The M637 Club Sport engine mounts are considerably stiffer than the stock mounts, yet they still offer some damping not available from solid mounts.

If youre thinking limited production racing part, it must cost a fortune, then for once you might be pleased to find that you are wrong. Where the stock cushy mount (part no 911.375.043.00) sells for about DM 165, the M637 mount (part no 911.375.043.07) sells for about DM80. Yes, thats twice the part, half the price! A true Porsche rarity!

The Story Behind My Site
After talking to fellow CS owners and trying to gather a bunch of info it was taking up a lot of space on my other car site www.jwilberding.freeservers.com

This site is by no means associated with Porsche or any of it's operations or subsidiaries, just a hobby site that I will try to update frequently.

UPDATE FROM OVERSEAS! from UK REGISTERY and CS lover Steve Darnell
Within the register enclosure we demonstrated a number of extremely well presented cars, information, data sheets, pictures, press quotes, all very clearly displayed on a white backdrop at the back of the allotted area. It was very useful to have all the facts and figures of our cars to hand and the Club Sport team were outstanding in the support (and also for managing to raise the newly appointed CS register flag on the flagpole !). Well done to you.

On the stand today we presented excellent examples from:

Patric and Jan Phelan - the first ever CS imported to the UK - looking resplendent, and drawing big crowds.
Steve Chappell - with many stories about his new track day bug "fantastic fun" according to Steve (he even let would be dreamers sit in his car !)
Paul and Vicky Dolphin - a great couple who upheld the very high standards set by Peter with his car
Alan Corderey - a lovely example, and what is more, the last man on stand tonight - thanks.
Gordon and Gloria Wingrove, in their superb and well restored Club Sport - simply pristine. (thanks for the tip Gordon)
Also, late into the event but eventually arriving on stand was our "no.2" car - John Colley - as ever taking some excellent photographs (cannot wait to see them John !)
Bob Croxford turned up in his car, (after a 2 hour traffic delay) but was told "we're full" by the organisers (not by us of course ") - but thanks for spending time on stand Bob.
Chris Kavannagh also turned up in his car, but again, we simply had no space to fit him in !
Mike Chadwick showed his Mint condition CS in pride of place in the special 40th year of the 911 display, and.....
our car was displayed on the front lawn, as part of the "Register Display" - again drawing much interest due to it's position.

This makes at least 10 cars - that's more than some countries imported for the entire production !

We also had much interest in the cars themselves. From interested onlookers who mentioned words like :- "It's the only one I'll ever want..or dream to own.." to people looking to part with serious cash for the next purchase. Most people who were looking (and there were many) were not put off by the speculative "£25K - £35K" price levels we mentioned. I think the launch of the GT3-RS is going to boost our pricing no end, so If you are looking to sell, please do keep us informed.

The display boards prepared worked very well - not only for basic factual communication, but also as a strong piece of "brand promotion" for our new Logo and of course - the cars.

We also had on stand our brand new and limited edition T shirt, and Michele (my good lady) managed to shift quite a number of these to almost anybody who happened to come on stand. Please do remember that if you are a CS driver you are getting this T shirt (only 340 printed at this time) for less than the price published in the Porsche shop. I had a smile on my face, because later in the day we saw several people that were nothing to do with the Club Sport wearing our shirt ! Superb Promotion !
